Most drivers carry at least a minimum liability car insurance policy, as is required by state law. But many aren’t well-versed on what their policy covers.

There are several different types of coverage, but three of the most common forms are liability, collision, and comprehensive. The cause of the accident typically determines which type of coverage should be used at your auto body shop.

Liability

Liability is what most states require drivers to have. It only covers damage and injuries only for other people.

In Texas, 30/60/25 coverage is the most basic requirement. It represents $30,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25 for property repairs.

Beyond this, you’ll be responsible for the expenses out-of-pocket. You may also be responsible for any costs to the other drivers’ car or hospital bill beyond what your policy covers.

Collision coverage

A white SUV is tipped into a steep, snowy ditch.
One-vehicle accidents are most often filed under collision coverage.

This is essentially any damage costs caused by a vehicle wreck. Even if it’s a single-car crash, like if you crashed into a median or a tree, collision coverage will go toward the repair cost.

This covers your own bills in an accident. Whereas liability is only for the other party involved, this coverage is specifically for you and your vehicle.

Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive coverage takes care of car repair costs for anything other than a collision. Depending on the policy, it could include the cost for a rental car during your repair.

This type of coverage can be helpful if you have hail damage, a tree falls on your car, or if you hit a deer. Most comprehensive damage happens when your car is not in motion and you, the driver, have no control over the circumstances. The amount of what will be covered in repairs depends on the type of policy.

Check your policy to see the amount of coverage. Coverage can vary and it depends on what you want to pay. If you don’t want to be out-of-pocket a lot of money for repairs after an accident, discuss this with your agent to make sure you have the coverage you want.

When an insurance company determines a car to be totaled, the they will pay its cash value up to the dollar limits on your policy.

When an accident happens, you’ll likely need a nearby auto body shop. Insurance companies often recommend a shop from their direct repair shop program. They choose the shops they trust to meet their own standards, within the customer’s local area.

Some collision centers offer more conveniences to be on the DRP list. As a result, this makes auto body repair easier for the customer.

what is a direct repair shop?

Recommended auto body shop

A direct repair shop meets specific criteria established by your insurance company. Your insurance agent will likely recommend a body shop nearby that is both convenient and trusted to do quality repairs.

Insurance companies routinely monitor direct repair shops to check for quality practices, so these shops are typically likely to have higher standards. This often means efficient, less expensive, and better customer service.

These shops will be a streamlined process for the customer who goes with their insurers recommendation, because those locations do not have to wait for communication back-and-forth with the agent.

Choosing a DRP

You can choose your insurer’s DRP recommendation or use a different one. The decision on where you want your car repaired is yours. However, the insurance agency might be more willing to pay for repairs through their preferred shop than one they don’t work with. It’s important to ask questions to both your insurance agent and prospective shops.

Important things to ask include whether the repairs have a lifetime warranty, whether your insurance will fully cover the repairs for one shop or another, and if the shop technicians are certified in auto body repair.

Collision repair is a complicated process. Don’t you want someone certified to work on your vehicle?

Your vehicle is one of the largest purchases you make, so it’s important to protect your investment. If you have an accident, have your car repaired at a certified collision center.

Certified collision repair means technicians train through industry-leading programs, often through car manufacturers. They learn how to repair a vehicle to the maker’s specifications. If you own a luxury vehicle, the manufacturers want repairs on that vehicle to meet their standards.

Manufacturer certifications

There are a variety of certifications in the auto body repair industry.  When researching collision repair centers, ask if that location has technicians who have received training by your automobile’s manufacturer. Once a technician reaches a minimum of two years auto body repair experience, he or she can be certified.

Also find out how often they train. As technology changes on vehicles, it is necessary to attend additional training. Advancing technology has made frequent training important in recent years.

I-CAR Gold Class

Certifications and advanced skills held by a team of technicians means they provide efficient, high-quality repairs resulting in a faster turnaround for the customer. For many shops, an experienced team is given an I-CAR Gold Class designation. ProCare is one that holds this designation.

We have 14 OEM certifications from a variety of manufacturers, such as Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Honda, and others. Customers can rest assured that ProCare will repair their car properly. We also have aluminum certified repair facilities with technicians who are trained by the manufacturers on how to properly repair aluminum on their vehicles.

Re-certification and ongoing training is our commitment to guarantee the highest quality repairs to your luxury vehicle. Because our team completes extensive hours and rigorous testing, they have proven their skills mastery.

A cartoon of five late-night hosts fixing a red car. The title says April is National Car Care Month.
Which of these late-night hosts would you trust to fix your car?

We all know that when it comes to car work, a customer’s decision is made on trust. What company, repair tech, or information do they trust most? A recent survey found that out of a late-night host lineup, Jimmy Kimmel has earned the most trust with car owners.

The Car Care Council asked more than 22,000 car owners nationwide which late-night TV host they would trust the most to fix their cars.  The lineup includes Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Trevor Noah.

Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! barely beat out Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s Tonight Show for the title of Most Trusted to Work on My Car.

“April is National Car Care Month, and with trust being a strong determining factor in choosing care maintenance and repair professionals, we thought it would be fun to ask vehicle owners which late-night TV host they would trust most work on their cars,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

While no one is asking you to get serious work done by a celebrity, it’s important to do research on the body or repair shop you want to go to before bringing your car in.

The team at ProCare Automotive & Collision, a body shop San Antonio, Texas residents have recommended for nearly 20 years, focuses on operational excellence and providing you with the highest quality collision repair. Our technicians are certified, and we provide a warranty on repairs and paint.

When you choose a body shop, you might consider going to a reputable center with more resources.

We all know that choosing a company you trust is vital for something as important as your car. However, there are other reasons reputable auto shops are often the way to go.

One of the biggest benefits is that more locations = more resources.

Equipment

When a collision repair shop has more than one location, typically they have more resources. For example, one shop can call on another location for parts needed. If one location does not have necessary tools, it could rely on another location to help with the repairs.

The same goes with specific equipment used to work on your vehicle. Some shops do not have the same level of technology as others. Bigger brands will typically have newer technology because they’re better able to provide them. So even if the location nearest you does not have the specific equipment you need for your car, it’s likely there is another shop nearby that does.

Knowledgeable technicians

A reputable auto body service will have a larger pool of technicians who have a variety of training and different knowledge. The technicians can connect with each other for expert opinions, or be able to give each part of the work to someone specialized in that sort of repair.

Customer convenience

If you live in one part of San Antonio, but work in another area, multiple body shop locations are convenient. For example, if the collision repair shop offers a warranty, you could have the issue resolved at any location.

If you are a repeat customer, the body shop should have access to your car history at any location. And when a shop is big enough to have more than one location, it’s likely the company has had success in serving customers at other locations, allowing it to expand.

At ProCare Automotive and Collision, a San Antonio body shop, we have locations north and south, plus locations in Live Oak and in Victoria, Texas. Additionally, we have collision centers located in the Greater Austin area and in the Houston area that are part of our ProCare family.

Using your smartphone can get you a quick preliminary estimate without going to the shop.

Technology changes just about everything. It provides safety features on cars and added conveniences. Your phone also helps you make informed decisions about what auto body shop to choose.

Your smartphone can now make your collision repair simpler. ProCare Collision offers a smartphone estimating tool that customers can use anywhere, and get a preliminary estimate without stepping into the shop.

Use your phone to get a collision repair estimate

When you have car damage and need repairs made quickly, this is a fast way to start the process. You can have the estimate tool texted to you from the ProCare Collision website.

To start, take photos of the damage, submit them through the tool, and receive an estimate via email within 24 hours. Then, you’ll have an idea of a baseline cost for your vehicle repair with ProCare.

Benefits of a smartphone estimating tool

This tool helps you get the repair process started right away. It can be done at any time of the day or night that is convenient to you. Once you have an idea of the cost and what it may take to repair the vehicle, you can begin working with the ProCare Collision team to have the repairs started.

Keep in mind that estimates provided from photos are only a preliminary estimate based on visible damage and that could change once a technician inspects the car more thoroughly. There could potentially be damage that isn’t visible to the eye, such as mechanical or to the car’s computer system.

For companies with fleet vehicles, using the Smartphone Estimating Tool can be beneficial so it doesn’t take vehicles or the employee away from work on the job.

ProCare launched the estimating tool to make the auto body repair process more efficient and hassle free. Use the tool to get your free estimate and we’ll get you back on the road.

various tools and headlight parts sit on a grey slate surface
Not all car parts are created equal.

Not all parts are the same when it comes to car repair. There are OEM parts, original parts created by the manufacturer, and then there are aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are off-brand and have a wide variety of price and fit.

If you want quality and a warranty with parts, then OEM is a safe choice. Certified auto body shops will be likely to offer OEM parts with their repairs because they are proven to fit and work correctly.

Are OEM parts worth it?

OEM parts cost more than aftermarket because the vehicle manufacturer makes them. An OEM part will match perfectly with other parts on your car.. The cost is often twice as much as what you may pay for an aftermarket part.

Most OEM parts come with a one-year warranty from the manufacturer, should anything happen to the part.

Should I save money with aftermarket parts?

There is a greater selection of aftermarket parts, but this also means they come in variations and the odds of getting a poor quality part are greater.

However, some aftermarket parts are similar quality or even improved from the original OEM part. Doing your research on specific aftermarket parts can help you determine if there’s a better option out there. This can be time consuming, but for some, the offset cost is worth it.

Aftermarket parts may decrease the car’s value. If you lease a vehicle, you need to look into what it could cost you long-term. Additionally, most aftermarket parts do not offer a warranty, so be sure to ask about a warranty if you choose these parts.

When our certified technicians at ProCare Automotive and Collision, a San Antonio body shop, make repairs to a wrecked car, we believe in providing the highest quality collision repair and use OEM parts. Should you want aftermarket parts, we work to find the best part that works with your vehicle.

close-up of a tire on a black vehicle
Taking care of your tires can prevent accidents.

Maintaining good quality tires on a vehicle is something car owners must do. Insufficient tread or air pressure leads to more than just a flat tire. In 2017, tire-related crashes resulted in 738 fatalities nationwide. While the number of tire-related crashes has dropped in the past decade, they can still happen and cause serious damage.

Proper tire maintenance is one of many steps car owners can take to prevent an accident.

Proper tire tread

The tread on tires can vary depending on the type of tire and the type of vehicle. You want enough tire tread to allow water on the road to go through the tread. This gives your car traction.

There is a quick test you can do to check your tread. Insert the penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head pointed down into the tread. If you see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace the worn tires on your vehicle.

If you don’t have change, look for the tread wear indicator bars which are located on several areas of the tire.

Check the tire pressure

The tire pressure for every vehicle can vary but is typically between 30 and 35 psi. Make a habit of checking your tire pressure routinely and it is especially important to do this before you drive on slick roads.

While most newer vehicles are equipped with tire sensors, you do not want to always rely on that in case the sensors malfunction. Under-inflated and damaged tires are leading contributors to a blowout, which can result in a serious collision.

A car sits on the side of the road with tall flames coming out of it, and a plume of dark smoke.
You might have a feeling your car is totaled, but you can still have its value assessed by your insurance.

You step out of your car, and you take a look at the damage to your vehicle. That’s the moment you know it’s more than a fender bender. You may ask yourself “Is my car totaled?”

It’s unlikely you’ll find out at the scene of a crash: The car’s value and body shop repair cost determines if it is repairable. It’s also important to know your insurance policy and the process to file a claim for repairs, which can make the process of repairs more affordable and/or timely.

What to do with a car totaled accident

The repair team will inspect the damage, complete the repair estimate, and compare it with the car’s current value. If the repair estimate is more than the current car value, the insurance will not qualify it for repair.

For example, a car with a value of $5,000 that needs $7,000 worth of repair will not qualify.

Check your insurance policy to know what you should expect with a vehicle that is not repairable. In most cases, the insurance company will issue you a check for the value of the car. If you do not agree with the amount, you can get quotes from used car dealers, view prices online, and note any additional or special features on your car. Show this documentation to the insurance company to dispute the amount.

Keeping a totaled vehicle

Cars hold sentimental value for many and some choose to repair a totaled vehicle.

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. The insurance company will subtract the vehicle’s salvage value from the amount it planned to pay you. To drive the car again, you need a salvage title. Repairs are your responsibility.

If you want a totaled car fixed, find a body shop you trust to provide an accurate estimate to repair the vehicle.

At ProCare Automotive and Collision in San Antonio, we have experienced and trained technicians who know exactly what it will take to repair the vehicle back to a safe and drivable condition again.
