This covers your own bills in an accident. Whereas liability is only for the other party involved, this coverage is specifically for you and your vehicle.
Comprehensive coverage takes care of car repair costs for anything other than a collision. Depending on the policy, it could include the cost for a rental car during your repair.
This type of coverage can be helpful if you have hail damage, a tree falls on your car, or if you hit a deer. Most comprehensive damage happens when your car is not in motion and you, the driver, have no control over the circumstances. The amount of what will be covered in repairs depends on the type of policy.

You may be familiar with technicians performing a scan on a vehicle to find issues. Most auto body repair shops perform a vehicle scan to estimate your bill. When you get auto body repair estimates, find out that shop’s methods.
There are two scans to ensure that technicians find anything that is not working and to make sure all parts are working after repairs.
Pre-scan before repair
After a collision, there is likely visible damage to the body of the car. What may not be as obvious is any damage to the car’s safety or other features. A pre-scan determines not only what is not working, but damage as a result of the collision. This scan captures the diagnostic trouble codes.
Determining damage that happened during the collision is important for the insurance claim, and also if you choose to pay out-of-pocket for repairs. The scan may determine issues unrelated to the collision, and distinguishes them from those that are collision-created.
Post-scan after repair

The Car Care Council asked more than 22,000 car owners nationwide which late-night TV host they would trust the most to fix their cars. The lineup includes Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, James Corden and Trevor Noah.

Your insurance may suggest a direct repair shop (DRP). This means they know and trust this shop, and consistently monitor their quality of work. Working with a DRP means the process is also more streamlined. These shops do not have to wait for an insurance adjuster to write the estimate and order parts.
You have the choice to go to another shop based on your preferences or the shop’s credibility, but your insurance may not cover as much if you go elsewhere.
2. Get an estimate
When the technician can view your car in person, the estimate will be most accurate. To get an idea of approximately how much the repairs may cost, most shops offer free estimates. Some has estimating tools online or through mobile apps.

When a hailstorm hits, it can leave its mark on your vehicle. The damage left behind can be significant. In San Antonio, the April 12, 2016 hailstorm cost $1.4 billion in damage to homes and cars. If you’re looking to repair hail damage, there are a couple of options body shops can provide.
Types of hail damage repair
There are two options when it comes to fixing those dents. The first is regular body work. This is for more extensive damage that often requires filling the dent, fixing the paint, and may take days in the shop. This can also affect your resale value if you make a claim to get the repair done.
The other option is paintless dent removal (PDR). PDR requires getting to the back of the dent and massage the body back to its original position. This option is fairly quick and easy, and also is less likely to affect your car value. It is also cheaper, but isn’t always an option with some dents and damage.
Get an estimate
Before getting an estimate, know what your insurance policy covers for auto body repair and if it covers PDR. Find a collision center that offers free estimates.
A technician can tell you what it will take to remove your damage, and what type of repair they recommend.
What to choose
If the damage to your vehicle has not chipped or cracked the paint, then it may be possible to have PDR to remove the damage. Typically, PDR is the go-to fix for hail damage. This is beneficial because it maintains the original factory paint, saves time, and saves money. Additionally, this is a good way to avoid any negative CARFAX reports if you plan on selling the car soon.
With more serious damage, you may need to go with regular body repair. Any paint damage will require collision repair to not only remove the dents but perform paint work on the vehicle.
